Comorile Muntilor Carpati

Silviu Matei - 2011-12-30
Acesta poveste este si in limba engleza.
This story is in English. At the end of this story.

Si ce bine dormeam eu atunci in mijlocul padurii in acea cabanuta mica de numai cativa metri patrati. Apoi, liniste pana dimineata.

Nimic…..

In 15 minute a aterizat unul, apoi dupa nici un minut inca doi.

In prima seara am pus in poiana respectiva din loc in loc niste boabe de porumb.

Pleca doar cand simtea prezenta altui urs in zona fapt care s-a si intamplat.

Urma apoi sa ne deplasam in zona Muntilor Tarcau si anume in zona catunului Ardeluta. O zona foarte frumoasa, foarte salbatica.

Pana in zona respectiva am facut cam 30 minute. In jurul orei 5 eram deja in padure.

Fotomodelul nostru inaripat.

Ne-am oprit din pozat si am continuat sa-l urmarim pentru a nu-l deranja mai tare si pentru a-i permite sa inainteze inca cativa metri in poiana deoarece se oprise langa marginea padurii si ne era teama sa nu o zbugheasca inapoi in padure. Fapt care sa si intamplat dupa cateva secunde, traversand in viteza toata poiana disparand apoi in padure.

A treia zi insa am avut o surpriza foarte mare.

Urmarind acest urs prin poiana am auzit incet cum rangerul ne spune in soapta “uite in stanga departe in dreptul pomului ala, in spate, alt urs”.

In aceasta sectiune veti gasi numai continut original, filme cu si despre animalele salbatice filmate de mine in full hd (1920/1080p).

Dar vremea nu prea a tinut cu noi, sus in munte pe la altitudinea de 1200 metri erau nori, ceata si mai ningea din cand in cand. Ne-am trezit noi dimineata dar vremea ne-a dezamagit. Erau nori, ceata si jos unde eram noi ploua usor.

Ce-i mult strica. Si uite cam asa s-a desfasurat “mica” tura prin munti incercand sa fotografiez Comorile Carpatilor.

Treasures of Carpatian Mountains
Since I started wildlife photography I wished I could photograph wild animals which are hard to see but also hard to picture,
but some things made me postpone for a while this wish.
At that ime, the lack of a better equipement was a decisive thing but with time the equipment I needed transformed in a very good teleobjective and also a very good photocamera.
I always whished to photograph bears from the deep forests in Romania, so this year, after a few researches, I and a best friend of mine (still an understudy in wildlife photography) left to photopraph bears in our country forests, more precise in Vatra Dornei and after that in Tarcau Mountains, Ardeluta area.
So here we are, the two of us with two bicycles in the 26th april, in the evening, standing in North Railwayl Station waiting for the train to get to Vatra Dornei.
We took the bicycles to easy our trip through the forest roads but this decision came up to be not such a good one because we had our backpacks really heavy. We managed anyway with our plans. But next time we’ll leave the bicycles home. We learn form our mistakes. We just got in the train and the ticket controller came and asked on a weird tone what’s with the bicycles…We said that there are our bicycles…and he said that we are not allowed to carry them in the train. After we explained that we did not have where to put them because there is no special van in this train, he left us alone. So we’re off to Vatra Dornei.
The night was pretty tiring because we couldn’t sleep so well and we guarded our bicycles…there were some weird looks from curious persons and
we had to be carefull. Aroung 3 am I managed to get a nap until 6 am. It was good that I could finally rest a little. So here we are in Vatra Dornei around 7 am.
We get off the train and it’s kindda cold…pretty cold I’ll say.
After we put some fit clothes from our our backpacks we start our trip to our destination, Brosteni city. Till there a part of the road is really bad and we had to make slaloms through the holes and we still couldn’t avoid them all. You just couldn’t do anything about it. Slowly but sure we got to Brosten where we meet our friends in the area and established our plan for the next 3-5 days. We finally decided to leave the bicycles at someone we could trust in the city. When your backpack it around 25 kilos it’s kindda nasty to ride the bike on a bad road also. We made that conclusion based on our experience and this was a little lesson…next time, no bicycles!

We better walk or use something local for transport. After we established the details it was time to slowly move towards the places where we’ll stay on watch. We walked for 23km on a winding road that was dragging us in the middle of the forest. The forest is very beautiful, very rich and thick but at the same time you can find a small wide place where you cand spot wild animals. Up on the edges, where the sun is low you can see also snow.
On the road, we can spot marks of deers and hinds which crossed the valey to drink from the river on this valey. The fog is with us in our trip since we first came in the valley. We finally arrive at the silvic canton where we could loose some of our heavy stuff which we didn’t need right away on our forest trip. Here the forester waits for us with food, 100% natural, some coffee and a brandy just right. It makes your throat fill like it’s on fire. And so we stood with the foresters good company, but it was time to get to work, as we didn’t come here to eat and drink. We came to do work and not sit to chat. We take the necessary stuff and take off around the area where I will stay for 2 days. There were 8 km on a forest road until the heart of the forest.
A wild area where the bear felt like home, and I was a little guest. In the winter of 2011 I came here in this place so it seemed familiar.
I stood at that time only one night, withour success.
The only visitors I had were a few ravens playing on the fresh snow and in the middle of the night a forest marten woke me up.
I was sleeping so well there in the middle of the forest, in my small hideout of a few square meters. This hideout is used during the year as an observation point for wild animals. When I heard the noise, I thought the bear came around, and I was really happy but with my eyes and ears sharp because I wanted to hear where it goes or what it does. After a while I realized that it was no bear around
because the noises are strange. Instead there were two tree martens. I think they were a pair looking for something to eat. For a few minutes I stood still
and listening as they spoke on their language up in the hideout roof, sniffing around. After that, quiet until morning.
Let’s get back.
Just arrived in the ideout again, I acted like in a hotel, made the bed for the night (the sleeping bag and a blanchet) and arranged my tools, the tripod, the
telephoto and the camera photo. And also I arranged my things in the right order. You may be wondering why I arranged my things in order. It’a a wildlife photography trick and I will tell you why.
At night or when the darks come it is not wised to turn on the light when you want to photograph wild animals. Why? Just because, at a simple seeing of
light they realize that there is something out there, and they become very cautious. And there are other little secrets which whoever would like to learn can do it at a wildlife photography class or better on photo-tours organized by me. You, as a “hunter” or observer don’t have to be there at all as far as the presence concernes. Then the waiting had started again, and I had again some sompany, a few ravens that were messing around that area. It was fun but also tyring because I could observe a few aspects in their behavior which you cannot see in other circumstances. I knew many things about this birds behavior but it’s good now and then to re-check on them and see them at other birds from the same specie. There will never be the same behavior at two birds. I had the chance to see them play and cuddle. If you have the chance to see them, I guarantee you that it will be fun and can’t help start laughing.
Those occasions are pretty rare but not impossible  and there are some rules so they can feel relaxed. They felt my presence once and flew away coming
back pretty cautious after half on hour. The night is falling down over the forest and there is no bear at the horizon. The night comes and I get hungry. In middle dark I start eating and finish in half an hour.
There was no hury in eating faster. From time to time I was peeking through the little window towards the valley to see if something is there.
And so the first night ended, waiting for mister bear which wouldn’t show up. Overnight I had again the same surprise with the two martens, only this time
one of them came closer looking fo some food. At the end, I couldn’t here them anymore so I fell asleep in my “4 star hotel room”.
I didn’t even noticed when the night has gone and I woke up around 6 am looking on the window. Still nothing…
I stood around other 2 hours, them I observed that in this area there is no move so I decided to get out slowly and loosen up a little, eat something
near the river. It was a small river there and it’s water was so clean and fresh and also very cold. I woke up instantly when I washed my face.
After a good lunch, made from a can with goose liver pate and a well smoked bacon with a good onion, I left around the wood hoping I could find something for my eyes to see. There were lots of tracks on the road, fresh from that morning, older wolf tracks and then on a small valley I found bear tracks, also fresh.
Well, he just might come around for a snack.
All day long I spent it walking in the forest, slowly and carefull looking for animals through the places mister forester showed me one year ago.
It was getting to 5 pm and then I got back to my “4 star hotel”.
When I got closer, I saw some ravens flying away but also some doves. Opsi, I guess there are those also here in this forest. That’s good, I have heard
them in those woods but never saw their faces, although I knew how they look like from the photos seen on the Internet.
I got in quickly and set ready my telephoto of 500 and started waiting. In 15 minutes one came, then after a minute of faster other two flew around.
If you don’t know how a pigeon looks like, you might say that it’s like those who stay in people yards. But the feathers are different and also the measures.
They are a lot bigger that the others.
After that I took some beautiful photos and also filmed them with my full HD camera (1920/1080). The result you will see on my website soon enough.
First night I put some seeds from place to place in that valley. In case of the bear coming or other animal, it would find something to eat and stay a
little longer in the area so I could take more pictures and also record it. It this picture you can see a little corn seed.
The pigeons looks like they found a small pile of corn seeds and they got to work but also very cautious getting closer so hard because they knew that food was never there before. Suddenly appeared there and this thing is kind of strange for them. I noticed that to other bird or animal species also.
The show took place for about an hour or so during which they were getting a few corn seeds, fly into a near tree then came back again to get more.
Then it was quiet. The next 2 days and nights were just like the first, no result. If there was nothing around the area I started taking pictures of the river, the few small waterfalls, the landscape and the wild forest.
In the same time I was thinking at my colleague who was in another area, about 8 km from me, and I was wondering if he had the same “luck” as I did.
Without a cellphone signal I couldn’t reach him. The third day the master forester came and also my collegue.I told him there was no bear and he said that this may happen: “you can stay a few days around and see nothing, this is the risc when you want to photograph wild animals, you can’t succeed all the time because the animal doesn’t come around when you want. He comes whenever he’s in the mood” – the master forester said. Things that were pretty normal and I knew them very well. My collegue, Eros, told me that on his side they came out the first night.
And he showed me the pictures. I was dying! I decided that it’s better that I should go there also, and stay together in another “4 star” hotel room
waiting for the bear. And so we’re off to the lucky place where we could observe, see and photograph bears.
We were lucky to be visited from the small til the big bear. Every day came around a little cub, with big nerves, he came all the way at about 5 meters
form the hut, time in which we were taking pictures and filming. He had no business with us, at first he seemed a little disturbed and carefull at the noise
from our cameras, but then he minded his own things. He was leaving whenever he felt the presence of another bear. We had the surprise of seeing a big mama bear which always came after 8 pm when in the forest was little light, fact for which we had to use a big ISO value, 3200 or 6400. Exposure was about 1/60 at a aperture of 4 or 4.5 on my 1D Mark IV Canon with Canon 500/4 L IS objective.
With this baby bear we amused ourselves for another 3 days, he came for about 5 times a day, and every night we stood excited to see what other bear is coming.
Maybe one bigger will come, or a mamam bear with little cubs. Even myself, which I’m used to wild animal presence I was nervous. Not scared, excited.
It’s that feeling that you cannot describe in words, to stay still in a place so the animal cannot observe you, to see him, take pictures and study his behavior, it’s unique. And the most important thing is that after you leave the place there would be no trace left behind and so the animal wouldn’t know
you were even there.
Why is it important this thing I will tell you some other time during the phototours I mentioned earlier. During the day, we were walking through the forest looking for animals and taking pictures of wild nature around the hut and then we started to take photos of a river near by. The five days spent in this part of Bistrita Mountains were coming to an end. We were going after that in Tarcau Mountains and some places of Ardeluta village. Arrived here, we meet the ranger of the area and we established the plan for the next days. After marking some observation points we hit the road to one of them.
We stood on this spot until dark then we went with the ranger back to where our host is and were we left part of the stuff we came with.
The next day we woke up early, meaning 4 am. And I was sleeping so well! We had our morning coffee real fast and then we left towards a very wild
part of Tarcau Mountains. We walked for about 30 minutes.

During 5 am we were already in the forest. A very thin fog was in the air so the forest looked very wild but mysterious in the same time. On the edge of the road, through the forest we saw lots of rivers and waterfalls, and we took lots of pictures form every angle. Walking and walking, the two of us and also mister ranger, now retired but with the desire to accompany us, we hear a strong noise.
It was the noise that deers make when they feel that in the area in danger. We lowered our positions and waited a few seconds without making the
tinies movement. The noise went on and on.
At first we thought it was a male deer but for our surprise we could spot through branches a hind with her fawn and on the other side there was carefull
watching, the king of the forest, a very nice red deer. We couldn’t took enough pictures due to the tree branches and the family slowly went away in the deep of the forest. I could see them through my camera.
We moved slowly towards the place they stood, observing that this was a knowed place for them and also a place for rest. We could see those things due to the tracks, both older and some of them very fresh.
Slightly disappointed I took a slowly sight. The ranger saw me and said in a whisper:“it happens that we meet them in the forest and not even suspect they
are there and so it is very possible they heard us even though we were silent. During the day they are very quiet and they rest, and the tiniest noise
make them very accurate towards the place the noise was made. We might have stepped on a branch”.
I remembered that one time we had to cross over a tree which was fallen down and maybe that’s when we made some noise with the branches.
Walking through the forest we also found, except the mane tracks of deers, wolves, lynx, a place where some wild boars played.
A big puddle full of dirt and near it the soil was searched like someone was there with the plough. It would be good if these wild boars could be tamed.
You wouldn’t need a plough and other machines. They would do all the job. And it’s also very cheap, with corn, a few square meter pound with mud.
This would do very fine. So we wandered through the forest all day long. At night we came back to one of the observ point and there we saw the first
bear from this areal which came at about 7 pm.
Together with the ranger towards one of the observ spots. The road was so and so but the mud in some places was over 15cm. This wasn’t a big problem
because we were equipped for this situation.
The first bear observed, photographed and filmed from this area.
At first he was kind of cautious and very observant in the direction of the noise – it was the noise made by our cameras.
Some little machine guns taking photo after photo with a speed form 4 shots per second until 8 shots per second.
We were well hidden so there was no way the bear could’ve spotted us, and he wasn’t sure of ehat is happening out there.
The bear didn’t liked the noise made by the cameras although we tried to make the shots at 3, 5 or 10 seconds.
From the pictures shown here ald also on my website www.outdoorphotography.ro you can see that this one was with the eyes on us, in fact in the direction of the noise.
There were minutes until the bear got used to the noise or at least we like to think that way, because if he would’ve spotted us he would’ve
run in the forest in a few seconds.
For an hour or so we took pictures, we filmed and could observe the behaviour.Slowly the night comes, the sun set for a while and the light in the forest was so little that even a big ISO of over 12800 wasn’t helping.
So we got back ending this first day from this area and being very happy that we succeeded, now waiting for a new day to do it all again, in the same
spot with new surprises. The next day we left again in the middle of the forest to discover new places where wild animals stay.
We didn’t had much luck with the animals, but we took some pictures of the river, the waterfalls, and now and then little birds.
At night we came back to that place waiting for something to happen, and guess what it appears.
A small bear which wasn’t disturbedby nothing at all.
At the first camera click he raised his eyes and looked towards us. We stopped for a while, we were just staring so we didn’t botter him and he could came closer thus he was at the edge of the forest and he could’ve jump back any minute. This happened after a few seconds, he took a speed run back in the forest. Only after a while he came back, being more cautious and looking for something to eat through the grass.
We left him alone and didn’t make so many pictures. We observed him, saw his bevaviour and the way he looked for food. I can tell you that is very nice.
The third day we had a big surprise.
We settled in the usual place and waited.
In about half an hour another bear came. A bigger one, so big it would’n fit in my camera frame. Following this bear in the area, the ranger
whispered to us “look there on the left side, near that tree, another bear”. I moved slowly the camera towards that place and I was surprised to
see another bear, in fact it was a she-bear. When she showed up, the bear that was already there started growling very strong, and we were kind
of 60-70 meters from them. In that moment we just stood there amazed. My colleague said “dude, it’s gonna be a fight”
My first impression after those few seconds of growling was that it’s gonna be a fight. We all thought at that. The she-bear was very determined and
was still marching towards the place where the other bear was. She wasn’t impressed by the other bear, but still kept a 2-3 meters distance.
Finally, mister bear was a gentleman and accepted her presence but still growling from time to time, just as a check up. We tooke 15-20 pictures and then started filming. I will post it on a different section on my website www.outdoorphotography.ro
In this section you will find only original content, movies with and about wild animals, made by me in HD (1920/1080p). I hope you’ll like it.
After an hour, the two bears left. Anyways, we couldn’t took any more pictures because the light was very low and we preferred to get back to the place where we could eat, chat and then take a nap well deserved, the next day planning to go at a higher area where we have the chance to spot the ritual of the mountain rooster. But the weather was against us, up there at 1200 m alttitude were clouds, fog and also snowing from time to time. We decided to wake up in the morning anyway and see if the weather changes. Said and done. We woke up but the weather was dissapoiting.

There were clouds, fog and was slowly raining. We took a walk around there but still nothing. The next day was packing day and preparing to go back to our homes, back to Bucharest.
Hm, disappointing the thought but there was nothing that we could do. I started to get used to being there, through the beautiful places, wild, with the fresh air.I would’ve stayed twice as that with no problem, but in Bucharest, at work, there were my coworkes waiting to give me stuff to do because
I was arriving with batteries loaded. Too much can damage.
So this is how our little tour through the mountains came up to be in the attempt to photograph the treasures of Carpatians Mountains.
